Our Horses Stories

We care about our horses.

Ferrari

Mare, purebred, 11 years old, pedigree. Angela saved her from the racecourse in Santo Domingo where she was, like many other racehorses, abused, doped regularly. This mare had been bought by a wealthy American newly settled in Sosua. Unfortunately he got into trouble with the law and disappeared abandoning the seven horses he had boarded at the ranch. it was a long job to detoxify Ferrari. More than a year of treatment. Today, she is a mare with a very gentle character, on which 4-year-old children can ride without danger.

Policia

Stallion, Paso Fino, 20 years old. Policia belonged to a brutal Dominican owner, owner of many Paso Fino horses that he let carelessly run through the country lanes of Sosua. Policia was the head of his herd and took care of his mares despite the danger of cars and trucks passing on the main coastal road. One day, despite the owner’s protests, Angela picked up Policia to treat him at the ranch because he was already showing obvious signs of epilepsy. Today Policia is a noble and calm stallion thanks to a weekly treatment.

Ghandi

Donkey, stallion, about 10 years old. Ghandi was found on the side of the road after being struck by a car. His back leg was fractured. Compared to horses, donkeys are hardy and strong animals. In six months, Ghandi recovered 80% of his motor skills and his fracture healed completely. We called him Ghandi because when he arrived at the ranch he was calm and kind. But now that he’s pretty much healed he’s showing his true character and he’s really not easy. But we love him the way he is and we have left him his name of peace even though he doesn’t really deserve it.

Merenguero

Stallion, paso fino, 40 years old. He is the dean of the foundation. Merenguero was world champion of Paso fino in Puerto Rico in 1988. He is a noble and majestic horse that was bought by a Canadian friend for a bite of bread after many vicissitudes due to its former owner. Just before dying from a long illness, our friend Gerry made Angela promise to take care of his 5 horses because he knew his wife would not want to. This was the case, of course without any money to take care of these horses. Today Merenguero is living a well-deserved retirement life. He still eats his weed and vitamin supplements with such enthusiasm.

Frica Nieve

Castrated male, 15 years old, criollo. Frica was the first horse saved by Angela 14 years ago. She saw him one day in the street, still a baby, carrying heavy loads of wood and stones, dehydrated and thin. Angela gave 2000 pesos to the boy who was hitting him to keep him going, and without  more discussion led Frica to a better life. He’s the foundation’s mascot. He is adorable and has a clown temperament. He knows how to bow and roll on the floor on demand. I think he knows how lucky he was to cross Angela’s path that day …..

Esmeralda and Montana

Mares, paso fino, 8 and 9 years old. With pedigree. Esmeralda and Monrtana are sisters and inseparable. When one leaves even for the shower, the other cries to the core. Angela knew the two mares had been put up for sale and was very familiar with the man who wanted to buy them. He was a man who mistreated his horses and was known for it. She therefore bypassed the sale with the help of the owner by putting two padlocks on the doors of the mares so that the man could not take them away. Then she raised funds from friends and bought the mares to give them a life worthy of the name. These two sisters are adorably sweet and let the children ride them without any problem.

Dulci

Mare, paso fino, 12 years old, pedigree. 5 years ago seeing how badly, frightened and traumatized this mare was, Angela accepted her owner’s request to take her to the foundation. For him, the owner, he did not see the problems of his mare. She had been so beaten and probably raped that she couldn’t stand the presence of a man next to her. Angela worked a lot with her to restore her confidence in human beings. Today, she is better but remains very fearful. Angela won’t let her leave with her former owner anymore. In any case, he never paid a cent for the expenses of his mare.

Don Demetrio P

Stallion, Pure blood, 12 years old, pedigree. A real champion at the Saint Domingue racecourse. Pure beauty, nobility, majesty, energy and yet calm and gentle. Saved by Angela from the harsh conditions of the racetrack then abandoned by his new owner. The foundation is honored by his presence.

Jack

Stallion, 2 years old, criollo. Jack was spotted on the side of the road by Belgian resident Rafaela. He was attached by a lanyard and thus stayed all day in the sun, without water and nibbling the little grass that his lanyard allowed him to reach. Rafaela and her friend Taimi decided to get him out of this lamentable life. With Angela’s help, they bought Jack from his owner to bring him to the foundation. They then discovered that jack had been severely beaten and his mind was filled with fear for humans. Angela took on a long daily job to teach Jack to trust humans again. Today, jack is slowly progressing and is part of the foundation’s herd thanks to the love of Angela and Taimi.

Raulin

Stallion, 11 years old, paso fino. It’s always the same old story … As she passed down a country lane, Angela saw this poor horse tied up in a field full of rubbish, in full sun, without water or grass. She therefore looked for the owner who made her understand that if she wanted to save this horse, she would have to buy it because he would do nothing for this horse. So was done.

Samuraï

Stallion, 5 years old, purebred – pinto mixture. Samurai was born at the foundation of a father and a mother both rescued. He is a very beautiful stallion, with a playful and friendly character. Unlike both of his parents, he never suffered from mistreatment.

Carmelito Cassius

Stallion, 5 years old, purebred – lusitano mix. Cassius was also born at the foundation of a mother saved from a very difficult situation. Several months pregnant this purebred mare was malnourished and dehydrated and was even at risk of losing her baby when Angela picked her up. Appropriate food and care allowed the arrival of a beautiful healthy foal. Today Cassius is a beautiful stallion, tall and strong. Like all teenagers, he loves to play but also knows how to be particularly serious and concentrated during his dressage sessions.

Rescue

We developed a natural method of communicating with horses.
We started to save horses that were starving, mistreated, abandoned, sometimes raped. We took them in and cured them, and from this initiative the Singing Horse Foundation was born.

When the physical part of the treatment of the abused horse is finished, the most difficult part remains, which is the psychological rehabilitation. To give him back his dignity and his confidence in himself and in the human being. With gentleness and love Angela works miracles with each horse, giving them time and space to return to a normal life.

Kimo

Castrated male, 15 years old, criollo. When Angela picked up Kimo, he was 2 years old. At that time he was still whole and of a very difficult character. That is why his master got rid of him and left him alone in the lagoon of Playa Chiquita. After several days of fruitless attempts to approach him, Angela finally gained his trust and brought him back to the house where Frica was already waiting for him. Frica was the first horse saved at the foundation and Kimo was the second. Angela was forced to have him castrated. Today Kimo remains a proud horse who does not allow himself to be ridden by anyone except Angela.

Tito Libio

Stallion, 7 years old, pure paso fino, pedigree. Tito was fathered for the purpose of competition. His father and mother were carefully chosen by Gerry, the owner. Unfortunately, a few months after Tito’s birth, Gerry died leaving 5 horses, including Tito, in the care of the foundation. Tito is a paso fino of exceptional quality as indicated by its pedigree. Otherwise he is a gentle and quiet horse who loves carrots and his neighbor stable, Demetrio.

Zapatero

Stallion, 8 years old, pure paso fino, pedigree. Zapatero is Policia’s son, as is Raulin. These horses had the same Dominican owner, Francklin. This man is passionate about paso fino, as one can be passionate about cars. Except that horses are living beings who have both physical and emotional needs. This seems to completely escape Franklin who treats his horses like soulless machines. This is why Angela, who knows this man well, allowed herself to take Zapatero out of his hands before he injured or deeply traumatized him as he had done with other horses before. It wasn’t easy but when it comes to horses (and animals in general) when Angela wants something ….. she gets it.
